A week in London

It’s been a long and varied week in London – stage rehearsals have started in earnest for Manon and the sitzprobes were this week too (for those of you who may not know the term, this is when the singers get the chance to sing with orchestra for the first time without having to do any staging of any kind). We have since moved on to stage and orchestra rehearsals and are steaming along towards the general (or dress) rehearsal which is on the 19th June.

It’s fair to say that there have been some wonderful highlights to my week. One of my favourite moment was on Thursday, when, in the second sitzbrobe for Manon at the Royal Opera House, Anna Netrebko sang Manon in fairly unusual circumstances. Unable to find a babysitter, she had to look after her little toddler during the rehearsal and was playing with, chasing and holding her little one and all the while singing with the most fantastic poise and beauty…excellent!!

I even managed to sneak a few hours at home this weekend, 26 to be precise, just enough to be able to spend a little quality time with my boys and check on the veg patch. Oscar and I spent a couple of hours weeding around the seedlings, feeding the brassicas, hoeing up the potatoes and then were rewarded by a very fine harvest of sweet, juicy strawberries, which just about made it to the table for dessert – Oscar and Archie do love their strawberries!! It’s wonderful this time of year on the veg patch as everything is growing so quickly – even the cabbages and calabrese that were planted only two months ago are already reaching maturity and will soon be ready for the table…can’t wait!!

So, now I’m back in London again and alongside Manon rehearsals the learning of Rigoletto has now stepped up a gear, along with research into the dramatic and musical characterisation of Rigoletto as a whole. I’m finding the whole process truly fascinating. Also, I’m singing in an opera pops concert on the 3rd of July and will be trying out ‘Cortigiani’, the big aria from Rigoletto, in the concert.

Everything is still on course to get some new demo tracks made in July and I hope to have some excerpts on the website ASAP following the recordings – watch this space, as they say!!!

All for now. E x
