Rigoletto debut for Scottish Opera

After six weeks of intense preparation Rigoletto opens officially tomorrow night, following the special Scottish Sun Readers’ preview on Monday evening which was very well received. It was more than slightly surreal to have my picture taken with the ten finalists for the Sun’s ‘Miss Scotland’ after the show!!

I have, of course, been doing lots of interviews for the show in the lead up to the opening night, including this one for radio 3’s In Tune show: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b010xy9m

This is truly a big milestone in my operatic career; Rigoletto is a role that I’ve been longing to do since I heard the great Verdi baritone Piero Cappuccilli sing ‘Pari Siamo’ during my first year at music college. I actually got to hear this great man sing the role live at Covent Garden a couple of years later and my love for this masterpiece just grew even more.

I have been very fortunate, for my debut, to have had a wonderful creative team to work alongside; including the amazing conductor, Tobias Ringborg, for whom I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration and Matthew Richardson, whose intelligent vision of this production, and the opera in general, has given me many new insights into the tormented character of the Court Jester. Everyone has been very supportive and I am so grateful for all their help.

It has also been a real treat to have such hugely talented singers alongside me in the other roles and I am so pleased that, for the most part, we are all making our debuts in our respective roles in this opera. We have all worked incredibly hard over the past few weeks and I think we have managed to achieve vivid portrayals of our respective characters.

This last week or so has a been a very long slog for all of us, both vocally and dramatically, as we have effectively had stage and orchestras and then three runs of the opera in five days…I think we have all coped extremely well. Stamina is something you need plenty of for this opera.

How does it feel to be finally singing Rigoletto? I am so happy and fulfilled that I cannot begin to put it into words…How about coming along to see the opera and you will get to see me put it into song?

You might also get to see a little more than you bargained for…(!)

E x
